Cabeza de Mármol Studio

Cabeza de Marmol Studio started as an idea during my undergrad at Sul Ross State University. The name is in reference to my childhood memories, which translates to “marble-head”. As a kid, my father used to call me a marble-head, saying that I was a very stubborn kid. It’s still true till this day.

I have also drawn much inspiration through memories of my grandmother’s coffee cups and how she seemed to enjoy her coffee any time of the day. They were all made out of clay and each of them was different. I experiment with these varied forms of my childhood memories and add my own modern contemporary twist into them.

My interest in ceramics grew when I realized clay became rock through the firing process; making a ceramic piece last for centuries. A conscience decision made by a human being that occurs naturally in the natural world.

When I throw a piece (whether it’s a cup, mug, or bowl) I think about three things: how this piece is going to feel when it is handled, how it’s going to be cleaned, and how it’s going to be stored for later use. As a whole, I’ve thought about how this piece is going to do the function effectively, while keeping an appealing look.

I want my ceramic work to be functional for the everyday use. I like when a cup or mug fits perfectly in the hand or fingers, and when a bowl has a perfect curve. But mostly, I like when stoneware fits with my daily life. I want my pieces to be easy to clean, and look good on my shelf. This is why I use more curves rather than angles, and try to keep them proportional. I glaze the the interior and the outside area along the rim. The rest is left raw. My intention is to preserve the nature of the clay in the outside. The varied horizontal lines on the raw clay, I think, add personality to each piece.
